Re: Buy, Borrow, Die. Legally Never pay Taxes.

Given that it could be feasible under the right conditions (thanks! ahhrunforthehills ), the last piece of the puzzle seems to be how to handle re-balancing. My first blush at that would be to just buy a single ETF that is a bond/equity mix . And then also hold some physical gold outside the system...

Re: Want to lose weight & treatment for diabetes

Which leads me to this question: These practices, both the salad and the vinegar/olive oil with bread, have been custom in Italy forever. Maybe back to the time of the Romans. So is it a case of ancient wisdom, where they *knew*. Or is it just a delicious happy accident? bread made with heirloom gr...

It's plausible that they meant to write "Clapton is good" but they were bad spellers.

Re: Buy, Borrow, Die. Legally Never pay Taxes.

One thing is for sure, if they raise the cap tax rate, living off of margin loans becomes a lot more attractive. Great feedback, thanks. I might suggest a qualifier to your comment above - if they raise the cap tax rate AND assuming interest rates stay low. Either one moving in either direction imp...

Re: Want to lose weight & treatment for diabetes

Vinegar has been shown to blunt the blood glucose and hence serum insulin spike when taken with carb heavy foods. A good example in practice would be the little plate with the olive oil and balsamic vinegar that a good crusty loaf of Italian bread is just begging to be dipped in before eating it. T...

Of course there is a well-worn joke that goes something like this:

"God is dead"
- Nietzsche

"Nietzsche is dead"
- God
Clapton is God

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

My doctor may or may not be qualified to determine whether the vaccines work and whether I should take it or not. Krispy Kreme and Whoopi Goldberg are probably less qualified. Yeah, good point. I bet doctors were on board with thalidomide too. I have a hard time with this line of thought. If you do...

Re: Buy, Borrow, Die. Legally Never pay Taxes.

Your spreadsheet is simply comparing pay now or pay later taxes. That was only to answer a specific hypothetical from Xan as to what would happen if the feds eliminated the step up on basis at death. I'm not proposing any "pay later taxes" at all :) Got it. I hope you model the two scenarios as a c...

Re: Buy, Borrow, Die. Legally Never pay Taxes.

Mathematically, assuming the tax rate stays the same, it doesn't make any difference. You'll have exactly the same at the start as at the end. So having 20% more to "grow faster" doesn't matter since afterwards the 20% cut will be bigger. ... Maybe I'm still missing it, though. You might be missing...

Re: Buy, Borrow, Die. Legally Never pay Taxes.

Wouldn't removing the "step-up on death" of assets also kill it? It seems that the point is to delay capital gains until you die, at which point you get a free step-up. Without the free step-up, the government gets its due eventually. Or am I missing the point? You got it Xan. But if that happens, ...

Re: Buy, Borrow, Die. Legally Never pay Taxes.

In a nutshell, you just invest and never sell your assets, so you never have capital gains. You live off of extremely low interest rate loans: margin, or HELOC's or PAM's (Pledged Asset Mortgages). Your assets are (presumably) growing tax free at a real rate greater than your risk free interest rat...

Re: Want to lose weight & treatment for diabetes

if it is the case that high-carb diets cause Type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome then why was T2 diabetes virtually non-existent from, say, 1900 to the mid-1960s (and fairly rare until the mid-1970s)? Re: What is your prediction for the future of the forum?

Again, the PP was never designed to be a great investment approach growth strategy. It was meant to be a good-enough investment approach capital preservation strategy that freed up your time and provided low stress so you can go do other things with your life. IMHO, its returns reflect that. If I m...

I did some back of the napkin math, and based on the average number of people I came in contact with day to day, at places like the grocery store, and assuming CDC death rate for covid, and average number of people who I might have given covid to, had I not worn a mask, and how many second order de...

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

I can see that say a Bitcoin has intrinsic value because it takes a lot of energy to produce it. Just as it takes work to produce gold. Say all the gold in the world was mined and sold. Supply of gold only coming from people who choose to sell gold and vice versa. Does intrinsic value say that gold...

This is a capital preservation strategy (in real terms), not a supercharged high alpha portfolio. Tortoise/Hare I agree with all of your points and want to call out one as the point that because I agree with it, makes the PP less useful to me. Unless you bought a house before 2020 and have at least...

Re: Does PP Only Work In Times of Declining Bond Yields?

Could it be as simple as the following? Invariably at least one of the asset buckets in the PP is going to be a dog at any given time. Maybe for now that means LTT. Accept it. You can't predict the future, and the idea is to be diversified so whichever way it turns, you'll have some cover This is a ...

I'm not trying to rehash this entire discussion: mostly I'm pointing out that history is complicated, and we do everyone a disservice when we oversimplify it. IAU is less accessible to speculators especially options traders. Thanks. I missed that it was a REVERSE...
