Re: Buy, Borrow, Die. Legally Never pay Taxes.

Wouldn't removing the "step-up on death" of assets also kill it? It seems that the point is to delay capital gains until you die, at which point you get a free step-up. Without the free step-up, the government gets its due eventually. Or am I missing the point? You got it Xan. But if that happens, ...

Re: Buy, Borrow, Die. Legally Never pay Taxes.

In a nutshell, you just invest and never sell your assets, so you never have capital gains. You live off of extremely low interest rate loans: margin, or HELOC's or PAM's (Pledged Asset Mortgages). Your assets are (presumably) growing tax free at a real rate greater than your risk free interest rat...

Re: Want to lose weight & treatment for diabetes

In this case D1984 looks to be correct, at least according to the CDC. Well shoot. I guess this means the genetic cards are really stacked against me. I think I'm probably in a similar boat as you in terms of the hand I've been dealt. At least we're living in a better time than ever before for eati...

Re: Want to lose weight & treatment for diabetes

if it is the case that high-carb diets cause Type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome then why was T2 diabetes virtually non-existent from, say, 1900 to the mid-1960s (and fairly rare until the mid-1970s)? Where are you getting this information? One of the more ghoulish things passed on to me by my p...

Re: What is your prediction for the future of the forum?

Summer is here (well at least in Florida right now), and Covid is subsiding. So it's time to quit sitting in front of the computer and go out and enjoy the big, beautiful world. People will probably return to the forum eventually because they have nothing better to do. When they do, they'll probabl...

Re: What is your prediction for the future of the forum?

Again, the PP was never designed to be a great investment approach growth strategy. It was meant to be a good-enough investment approach capital preservation strategy that freed up your time and provided low stress so you can go do other things with your life. IMHO, its returns reflect that. If I m...

Re: Lives Saved Since March 2020?

I did some back of the napkin math, and based on the average number of people I came in contact with day to day, at places like the grocery store, and assuming CDC death rate for covid, and average number of people who I might have given covid to, had I not worn a mask, and how many second order de...

Bitcoin is also a network so you can code metadata to bitcoin transactions that can have real practical uses.
If I'm a bitcoin holder, how would I benefit from that?

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

I can see that say a Bitcoin has intrinsic value because it takes a lot of energy to produce it. Just as it takes work to produce gold. Say all the gold in the world was mined and sold. Supply of gold only coming from people who choose to sell gold and vice versa. Does intrinsic value say that gold...

Re: Does PP Only Work In Times of Declining Bond Yields?

This is a capital preservation strategy (in real terms), not a supercharged high alpha portfolio. Tortoise/Hare I agree with all of your points and want to call out one as the point that because I agree with it, makes the PP less useful to me. Unless you bought a house before 2020 and have at least...

Re: Does PP Only Work In Times of Declining Bond Yields?

Could it be as simple as the following? Invariably at least one of the asset buckets in the PP is going to be a dog at any given time. Maybe for now that means LTT. Accept it. You can't predict the future, and the idea is to be diversified so whichever way it turns, you'll have some cover This is a ...

Re: Finding Stuff To Make You Angry?

I'm not trying to rehash this entire discussion: mostly I'm pointing out that history is complicated, and we do everyone a disservice when we oversimplify it. OTOH, the more complicated a rendition of history becomes, the more susceptible the rendition becomes to biases of the presenter. This is a ...

Parody is the ultimate form of flattery. I think the quote you're looking for is: "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness" - Oscar Wilde And yes, the irony is staggering. Re: IAU Reverse Split 5/24

Why would IAU do this? To manipulate the ETF price lower so they can be more accessible to buyers wishing to make smaller purchases? Actually the complete opposite. Price is raised, not lowered. IAU is less accessible to speculators especially options traders. Thanks. I missed that it was a REVERSE...

I think I've posted this observation before, but it seems like there is a delayed reaction before the PP buckets spring into action in response to a changed economic condition. It looks as though this is the case with gold at the moment. Coincidentally, gold started it's climb right after I started ...

Where are YOU getting your data from? I went to this webpage (you have to click on "trends" to get to this): https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/covid/covid-19-data-trends.page Then click on "hospitalizations" which is the most reliable statistic to use. "Cases" is completely dependent on extent of testi...

I also find it interesting that NYC's daily COVID hospitalization rate is exactly the same now as it was a year ago - when the mask mandates were freshly imposed and there was no vaccine. Last year, it continued to slowly drop through the summer, reaching a nadir of < 10 per day by the fall before ...
