Re: Arbery case

The judge in the Arbery case handed down life sentences to the three defendants today. The McMichaels father/son were sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, and the third defendant William "Roddie" Bryan gets the possibility of parole after 30 years. It's not over for the three either....

Re: Arbery case

What Scott Adams was saying about the Rittenhouse trial had nothing to do with his own opinion about his guilt or innocence. His comments came out when the jury was taking a lot more time deliberating than people expected even though there was pretty clear video proof of self-defense. I don't know ...

Re: Arbery case

It's true that all people have biases, and those biases are going to affect the application of facts to the law. However would you accept that biases are at least somewhat mitigated in that the jury consists of twelve jurors, and their decision must be unanimous? To find twelve people with the same ...

Re: Kyle Rittenhouse

What’s also insane is seeing how gingerly the McMichaels and Roddy were handled by the police, directly, and initial prosecutors, indirectly. It’s amazing how much benefit of the doubt they gave the guys when these guys were basically admitting to illegally detaining and therefore subsequently murd...

Re: Kyle Rittenhouse

I see that the Ahmaud Arbery trial ended up with a conviction on all counts for all three men who will probably be spending the rest of their lives in prison or at least the better part of it. I have not follwed this case closely so I'm not going to second guess the jury because I didn't see any of...

It would be really awesome if some organization could just report the facts, without any opinion or bias. Not holding my breath.
If such an organization appeared, and just reported the facts, I wonder how many people would even believe them?

Re: China Bans Cryptocurrency Transactions

And CPI is the most accepted measure of inflation. Indeed, when we calculate inflation-adjusted returns, we adjust them using CPI, not a measure of money supply. As I understand it, CPI is a measure of the change in price over time of a market basket of consumer goods and services. So what about as...

Re: China Bans Cryptocurrency Transactions

I personally feel like if everyone is allowed to act in their best interests in an economy that isn't manipulated then things will work itself out, maybe harsh for some but who's to say what system is fair. I agree with you, but only up to some type of circuit breaker threshold. Beyond that level, ...

Re: China Bans Cryptocurrency Transactions

Printing money is the definition of inflation for whatever money in question. Whether the printing of money affects how much it costs to purchase some other thing is a different story. If KBG means printing money != CPI inflation then I agree. Right, but if you have an economy that is suffering fro...

Re: China Bans Cryptocurrency Transactions

More printed money != inflation. We all just witnessed that for 13 straight years. Japan is going on 30+ years of big printing presses and no inflation. Is it possible that Japan has plenty of inflation, but you and I can't see it because it's being canceled out by the persisting deflation that was...

Re: The GOLD scream room

I'm looking at some data showing gold up roughly 16% over the past 2 years. Total inflation over that time is something in the neighborhood of 7%. I'm trying to look on the bright side and realize that the explosion in asset prices last year was an aberration, and our 2021 gains were delivered earl...

Re: The GOLD scream room

With gold down about 6% over the last 12 months and stocks up 31%, I am curious if anyone is re-balancing into gold recently. This raises a sidecar question. Why is gold down over a 12 month period of inflationary and other worries? I think most of us would have expected a period like this to be on...

Very interesting. I've asked around about this mish mash, and this is what some people are saying: The Haitian refugees are indeed Chilean-Haitians who have migrated up a 5000 mile transcontinental overland route to Del Rio. They have done so at the invitation of the Biden administration. A few tok...

What is not mentioned, is Mexico's role in assisting the Haitians with the "5,000 mile trek" and in co-ordinating the timing. They didn't make it from Santiago to Del Rio on their own. It's called international cooperation. With the power of synergy, you can make a 5,000 mile journey happen in the ...

If living in a "shit-hole" country qualifies for refugee status we're sure to have gazillions of refugees from around the world. I don't think that's currently the legal qualification for being a refugee, as though that even seems to matter. Well besides being a "shit-hole" country, the present iss...

BOOM, down 5% just like that, curious to see where this goes, my models are all close to going out of equities. Out of equities completely? What would your portfolio then look like? Just curious. Re: The Afghan Papers

Does Woodward's book say anything about how the Chinese responded to Milley's call? If they took it serious and raised the DEFCON level, or whatever the Chinese equivalent is, then that doesn't sound like a trivial thing to me. I think Woodward is somewhat of a fabulist, as is the rest of the press...
