Worth waiting for premiums to drop?

Hey All, So I'm looking to add more gold as I'm still in the accumulation phase, and the premiums on gold coins at this point are quite high. I'm seeing around $150/coin or nearly 9% or so. Usually I am only paying around $50 or $60 over spot per coin. Given that an ETF can give me exposure to Gold ...

Re: Desert Portfolio Question

Well the obvious risk is rising interest rates, but really the portfolio isn't that far off from the PP. Instead of a Bond-Barbell (25% 30-year, and 25% 1-year) you replace it with 60% mid-range bond (10-year). That puts you slightly overweight on bonds compared to the PP, which means that as intere...

Re: Where to Start Out...

You should definitely ensure you are going "all in" if you are going to go in, buying one or 2 assets would leave them uncorrelated and result in unbalancing the portfolio.

Depending on the amount of assets you have would depend how I would go about setting it up.

Re: Worst investing year ever...

Stocks down, Gold and LTT’s up at end of pre-market. Will the day end this way or should we expect to see a reversal with stocks ending up, Gold and LTT’s flat to down? The question to ask yourself...”is this pattern actionable.” Can we continue to ignore this pattern? Borderline ridiculous, right?...

Re: Purpose of the PP

Thanks for the thoughtful responses. For the record I am invested 70/30 in retirement accounts so don’t feel I have missed the rise in equities by any means. I have just lost faith in the portfolio to provide stability during market fluctuations (10% or greater) and it has failed to do so during th...

Re: Purpose of the PP

Budd, Have you read any of HB's books or listened to his podcasts to understand why he recommended 25% gold? it's not just about annual returns. BTW, I always enjoy your Buddbursts, both the happy and sad. Glad you are here. As they say, if you weren't here, we would have to invent somebody like yo...

Re: Purpose of the PP

That's a great post DragonJoey. You have to understand that Budd only has $13M in his portfolio, so he needs to swing for the fences in order to meet his FI goals. Budd's bitter that he's not getting 15% returns every year, and I'm bitter that I don't have $13M to put into T-bills. I guess the gras...

Re: Purpose of the PP

YTD performance: PP: -2.9% return with 4.9% volatility All-world 60/40 benchmark: -3.1% return with 7.7% volatility So YTD, compared to a 60/40 portfolio, the PP has provided about the same return (slightly higher, actually) with 36% less volatility. Tortoise, thank you for that. Problem is the PP ...

Re: Is Gold still the currency hedge it should be?

. . . is facing competition from bitcoin. The reason I can't buy into bit-coin is the very fact that government can't legislate it and prevent it from leaving the country with capital controls. I could easily see a future where the U.S. Government under the auspices of "preventing illegal money tra...

Is Gold still the currency hedge it should be?

I often wonder with as much Gold as I hold in the PP if it's still serving as the currency hedge it should? I do believe that the US Government continues to slowly tax the saver by weakening the dollar, and that despite inflation not picking up as the fed expects they will surely not raise rates too...

Re: Permanent Portfolio Book Question

I will be taken to task for saying it, but stocks are up 71% in 5 years, long bonds (TLT) up 22%, and gold -26%. You might want to underweight stocks a bit, like 20% instead of 25%, and hold 30% cash instead of 25%. Just my personal opinion. I don't know about "taken to task" but I would certainly ...

Re: Difference between PP and Risk Parity

Hal, Yes, you are correct in noting that the PP is not a Risk-Parity approach. In fact for a good while there Gold was barely moving at all (very low volatility) and the PP would still allocate 25% to it. Risk parity ascribes a level of risk per asset based on that assets volatility , and attempts t...

Re: Asset Allocation Ideas when you have a Mortgage

I agree with Harry 100% on this one. Housing is where you live, it's not an investment and shouldn't be treated as such. What Harry says on the topic of real estate: Some people think of real estate as an investment. And, of course, it is possible to buy a home and later resell it at a higher price....

Re: Holding gold in retirement accounts

So this thread spurred me to talk to the wife about getting some physical gold and what we decided was we would purchase some from our cash emergency fund and use the Roth's as a form of emergency fund. I'm fortunate to make enough that the situation will not be permanent (i.e. able to put over $40k...

Re: Holding gold in retirement accounts

Sophie, I too feel your pain. I have been wanting to buy physical gold for a while now but all my investments just barely fill the large amount the gov allows me to defer ($18,000 in 401k, $11,000 in roth IRA's, $6,750 in HSA, etc...) All told I need to invest over $35,000 and possibly more than $40...

Re: Question for original forum members

I mean, I learned about the PP in 2011 and joined the forum in 2012. I have nowhere near 1000 posts because as others have said, there isn't a lot to talk about for a portfolio that's just so good at what it does. (though I look forward to the next 2008-like crash where the chatter will undoubtedly ...

Re: PP in non QE world

I would rather own bonds when they pay 5% than when they pay 2%. I don't need to ride US treasuries from 2 to 5% to make that decision. I happen to think QE has distorted the price of all assets. If such mispricing has AIDED the PP I cannot imagine that ITS UNWINDING will also help it. That is what...

Re: PP in non QE world

Rising rates on bonds is nothing new (1970's) and the PP can manage. Remember that as bond rates go up so to does the returns on CASH. "What's that?" you say "cash can actually make a return!?" Yes my friends, it is possible to hold cash and actually see a return, and we may perhaps be returning to ...

Resurrecting the debate of Leverage using a house

So I know this has been mentioned here before in another thread, and I am also aware the one of Harry Browne's rules is to not use leverage.  However, I am about to take out a mortgage at around a 4% interest rate.  I am still in the accumulating phase of the PP, and at the moment I am putting about...

Re: No where to hide

"Economic Headwinds" does not equate to "Economic Collapse." I agree that there will be some strain on the economy, but I think Social Security is far from "about to collapse."  A large part of that is due perhaps to the irony that many Baby-Boomers have failed to save for retirement and continue to...

Re: How bad, historically, has the last 2 1/2 years been for the PP?

It just seems like a waste to not try to optimize at least the timing of the rebalance event. Given that the choice of how and when to rebalance is left to the artistic license of the user... once a year, once a quarter, 20/30, 15/35, whatever you choose, it seems arbitrary to then say, "well, but ...
