Re: When will indexing blow up?

Here is this question answered by Burton Malkiel at the beginning of this year:

The whole video is enjoyable and impressive coming from the 90 year old Burton Malkiel.

Re: Stock Picking in the PP

+1 with Vinny. I have also had a lot of hand wringing recently on what would be the best fund to use for stocks but have settled on a total stock index fund. I was looking hard at some active funds as potential candidates but I didn't have enough faith they would out perform. I leaned more toward fi...

Gold - THE MOST CORROSION RESISTANT METAL!

I just stumbled upon this video that shows some scientific experiments with gold. I especially enjoyed the section with acids dissolving gold. Best I could tell, they could not destroy the gold. They only break it down into smaller particles which I assume must just be more pure gold than the .999 g...

Re: New Ideas about Sleep

As a lifelong insomniac I can get on board with the body wanting to stay awake for 30 to 40 hours. If I didn't have to live by a schedule I could see getting into a sleep schedule that did not revolve around a time of day at all. I can't even comprehend being able to sleep for 10 hours and feel pret...

Re: When is it time to load up on bonds.

I decided it was time to get back into long bonds sometime last month and went pure permanent portfolio in the accounts I was able to in. My thought process was that your best opportunity to take advantage of long bonds is when the yield curve gets as inverted as much as it is now. https://www.longt...

Re: Would you buy an even longer bond?

I wanted to hear some context from Harry himself so I listened to this show 05-04-24 - The effects of interest-rate changes on the economy https://youtu.be/R34Bct2OKFM?t=2224 It seems to me that the context is a world where the 30 year treasury bond is the longest dated bond. As welderwannabe mentio...

Fidelity Gold, Silver, Platinum, and Palladium Trading

When did this happen? I just learned of this from snedgar in the other thread. This at least feels like lower counter party risk with some higher fees. https://www.fidelity.com/trading/investment-choices/gold-silver-platinum Buying and selling fees: Fees5 Gross amount Percent charged on gross amount...

Re: Huh, 1/N Asset Allocation is Quite Robust

Interesting. I was not familiar with this but found some more context in a 2011 paper that was also in support. http://arno.uvt.nl/show.cgi?fid=129399 In circa 400 A.D. Jewish Rabbi Issac Bar Aha recommended always to invest a third into land, a third into merchandise and to keep a third at hand. Th...

I expect this fund would be of interest to folks interested in permanent portfolio. Maybe this has been mentioned before but I just heard fresh advertisement of Meb Faber's podcast. It can be hard to define but the government deciding what is truth and not allowing public discussion does shut down free speech.

Re: The Twitter Files

Free speech isn't the issue democrats care about so it won't change any minds. I imagine everyone has an issue that would cause them to abandon their party if the other party had their preferred stance. I know I would abandon all other positions if the republicans were the ones shutting down speech ...

Re: Tempting Cash Rebate offers

You are right. I was mixing up the 30k and 70k bonuses. Long story short is you are not getting that full bonus when you look at opportunity cost of moving from Treasury to citi So maybe you get $300 of that $500 bonus if you are lucky. Would be much more attractive if Treasury wasn't already paying...

Re: Tempting Cash Rebate offers

After seeing rate was better for lower amounts, I contemplated the $500 for $30k offer but still don't think it is worth it.

After state tax, rate would be more like 5.1

1 year Treasury is 4.75

So all the trouble to earn an extra .35 %

$100 maybe?

Re: Tempting Cash Rebate offers

My calculations show this worse deal than Treasury money market.

It would only be about annual 4% return if you could replicate every 60 days. Rough estimate 2000 of 300000 is .66 % , x 6 is 3.96.

You would be better off buying 2 month Treasury that doesn't have state income tax for sure.

Just noticed.

IAUM
Now at .09% expense ratio.

Bid ask spread and premium spread are looser than GLDM so I think GLDM would still be more cost effective.

I completed a 3 month auction just in time to watch the rates go up right after. I also set up auto roll on it. For simplicity sake I am liking both sgov and cltl as mindless place to put cash while waiting for I bond space. Sgov is winning out for now but their expense ratio is scheduled to go up t...

I wondered if you could make it simpler with ETFs. I don't know how to calculate your yield though. You could split money 3 ways between these funds to spread out the duration. Then sell the fund that is up when you need to make a withdrawal. https://www.pimco.com/en-us/investments/etf/1-5-year-us-t...

That is generally helpful to stop a tweet that is disinformation. According to a description under the annotation, “Context is written by people who us...
