Re: Local coin shop -- owner busted
He's already been tried and convicted on the fraudulent dealings issue. Was sentenced but is out on bail pending appeal. Supposedly he's still dealing in the business out of state and the store is still open with another person manning the counter. However, he's currently working through the legal s...

Local coin shop -- owner busted
An area coin shop had a few 10th oz gold eagles selling for what the online shops were buying for. Being new to this, I just browsed, asked a few questions and walked away. A little Googling turned up that the owner was busted for selling fake coins and autographs...along with dealing in other vario...

This is from the paper-based FAFSA application. No mention of collectibles. ---------- Investments include real estate (do not include the home you live in), trust funds, UGMA and UTMA accounts, money market funds, mutual funds, certificates of deposit, stocks, stock options, bonds, other securities...

Re: 529 plans, etc
We went through the same thought-flow here a few years ago. Ugh...the whole friggin' system is rigged to benefit the irresponsible. For our situation, asset placement is key. The more we can stuff into 529/Coverdell/IRA/401k the better our chances for financial aid. The tradeoff is the lack of inves...

Re: Tax Loss Harvest -- options/advice
Thanks for all the information. I'm going to ask my tax people to take a look at the situation and get their take on it. This is all hypothetical and out of curiosity for me anyway. You nailed it -- each person's situation is different. Example: I'm 100% comfortable maintaining the portfolio in a br...

Re: Tax Loss Harvest -- options/advice
It seems VUSTX or VGLT into pure treasuries (or vice versa) are not substantially identical due to the non-treasury holdings in VUSTX and VGLT. There is also the difference of active management vs individual bonds difference too. But is it enough of a difference? Note -- I have no idea what I'm talk...

Tax Loss Harvest -- options/advice
Is it a wash sale to tax loss harvest from VUSTX to individual Treasuries (and vice versa)? How about VUSTX to VGLT? Too similar to justify or not? VBLTX would be more of a clear difference. It didn't behave well during the fall of 2008 though. Might be a parking place for 60 days until one could g...

Re: Permanent Portfolio Book - Kindle Edition Now Shipping!
Hi folks. Long time lurker, first time poster. I just finished the Kindle edition of your book. Excellent book. Thank you! I've been fascinated with the PP strategy for some time now. I just didn't have the guts to get in (I had tunnel vision and was scared of LTT and gold). You explained the strate...
