Re: More Diversified Fund for Stock Portion

IIRC, the total stock + smallcap value combo is more of an equal weighting across the spectrum of stocks.

Re: Simple, Healthy, Delish Recipes

This one is pretty good: 2.5lb ground beef 5 potatoes 1 onion 1 can cream of chicken Shredded cheese S+P 1. Brown beef and set aside. 2. Chop up potatoes (kinda small) 3. Chop up onion (same size as potatoes 4. Layer casserole dish with each layer. Put salt and pepper on each layer. Then put the cre...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

I don't know about everybody else but I'm finding the resistance we're seeing to the Biden vaccine mandates both surprising and encouraging. Nurses and other health care workers along with people in the airline industry, pilots and air traffic controllers especially, seem to be the leading the char...

Bill Kristol and Scott Horton Debate U.S. Interventionism

Bill Kristol and Scott Horton Debate U.S. Interventionism from 4 OCT 2021, via ReasonTV. Scott's response to Krystols red herring about girls in Afghanstan made me LOL, I had the same response when someone IRL asked me a question in a similar vein. Bill's responses were abysmal (especially everythi...

Re: Geeks for Monarchy: The Rise of the Neoreactionaries

More than a century after the last Czar and Czarina were assassinated in the wake of the Bolshevik revolution, a collection of Europe’s noble families gathered to celebrate Russia’s first royal wedding since the days of the imperial monarchy. The groom was Grand Duke George Mikhailovich Romanov, 40...

Re: Are We Living Under Communism?

I'm a few beers in, but let me take this for a spin. I think you oldsters grew up in a "Communist takeover bad!" world and tend to associate communism with bad government, but there are other kinds. In the end, I don't think it really matters, because what they both have in common in repressive tota...

Re: Public School Issue

My son is heavily into computer coding, programming languages etc. His public school doesn't teach any of that. However, this week he brought home a 20 page printout on King Tut and he spent 2 hours on Wed night giving a choir concert (choir is forced participation here) where they had to sing pop ...

Re: Public School Issue

I'm currently reading The Case Against Education by Caplan. He's a college professor (fellow autist Tyler Cowen helped him get his job) who successfully homeschooled a couple of his kids. He makes a lot of points, like how an absurd amount of time is wasted in schools on useless subjects like Art an...

30% cash in a near zero interest rate environment and stated inflation running at over 4% ??
Cash is kind of like an option on future assets, and one has to pay a premium for options.

From Barron's: Why Merck’s Celebrated Covid Pill Could Be Riskier Than People Think Merck ‘s announcement that its antiviral molnupiravir had halved hospitalizations in a trial of high-risk Covid-19 patients was met with enthusiasm on Friday, inspiring a vision of a world in which treating a Covid-1...

Well, received the latest Jim Rickards newsletter, and guess what, seems rather PPish A portfolio robust to slower growth, lower interest rates, and popping asset bubbles would include: 10% gold, 30% cash, 20% high-quality government notes, 20% in land or residential real estate, and the remainder ...

Re: Calling ALL IBond aficionado's!!!!

Thanks for posting that. Just not sure I agree with this part: "If you’re considering I bonds, I would suggest waiting until Nov. 1, when the interest rate will reset to a much higher level." I mean, if you buy I-Bonds today, you would still get 3.54% for six months and then the (presumably much) h...

Re: Why isn't gold moving?

IMO any asset that wants to be seen as a safe haven (much less as a viable currency alternative) has got to become less volatile on a day-to-day basis. Hell, TQQQ, FNGU, and NUGT are all less volatile in daily and monthly std dev returns than BTC is and those are some of the wildest leveraged ETFs ...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

Something I ran across recently was the Straw Hat Riots of the early 20th century. I think it bolsters my opinion that a lot of the mask mandate and vaccine mandate hysteria is just another socially-sanctioned way to be a dick. But what starts out as a kind of cultural meme or cultural quirk when it...

I don't think people are mad about Roth conversions, they're mad that Peter Thiel made a lot of money in a way that they wouldn't have done even if they'd known about it. And he won't have to pay taxes on it.

A year ago this month, my gold was at 33.5%, and now it's at about 25%. So (if my math is right), if I would have balanced out of gold back then, my gold allocation would be at about 17% right now. Probably a case for rebalancing when you're close to the 15/35 bands and not being such a turd. It ma...
