Re: Negative interest rates

In 1927 the CPI dropped 1.7% and didn't turn positive until 1934 when it was 3.1%, a 7-year run without any inflation. (In 1929 it was 0.0%.) It went negative again for two years in 1938 & 1939. (But of course there's nothing like a world war to turn it positive.) So we've had extended periods of US...

Re: Question on adding new money

I believe you should adjust the PP when you deposit to reach your 25-25-25-25 goal. That doesn't mean you need to force a complete rebalancing if you're making a relatively small deposit; just buy whatever is the lowest portfolio percentage at that moment. But as you build the PP, I believe the idea...

Re: Gold dealers?

I wonder, what has happened with Tulving?  I have always been satisfied with prior orders. I have seen complaints in the past, but delayed, uncertain delivery is a problem that I would pay a little more to avoid. http://golddealerreviews.com/tulving IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING THE CLOSURE OF THE TUL...

Re: Any downside to bars?

One downside to gold coins in a SHTF world is, most people are completely ignorant about gold. The coins have a face value of $50 and that's probably what you would be offered for it. Someone said to me the other day, "How much is gold worth these days, like, $200?" They had no idea what the going ...

Re: Physical Fractional vs. Full oz. Gold

My 2 cents on fractions (from a wholesalers point of view): Modern: Modern fractionals are more expensive over their 1 oz counterparts. Then again 1 oz coins are much more expensive than kilo bars. Why would you buy them? Only if you want to buy a fractional ounce because you can't afford the full ...

Re: Where and how do you purchase physical gold?

Just called Manfra, Tordella, and Brookes and the current process when buying from them is quite complicated. To get into the building you need to sign in and get fingerprinted (anyone put off yet??). Then they issue you a key card which gets you into their office upstairs. They charge 3 & 3/4% ove...

Re: Does Gold's Markup Bother You?

My answer: No, gold's markup does not bother me at all. It's very, very small. And insignificant. Here's my take on it (posted in another thread, so I'll just post the link): https://www.gyroscopicinvesting.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=8914&start=60 I was just reading that post. You make a compell...

Re: Buying Physical Gold

I highly support the decision to buy American Eagles. I think the safe deposit storage strategy is fine, too, but I'd think long and hard about paying insurance on them. Very expensive relative to the miniscule risk. I like the idea of diversifying the storage locations and keeping them several plac...

Re: Will I look like a noob whipping out a coin balance at the coin shop?

If I were a coin dealer and a customer brought out a balance to test the coin, I'd be happy about it, unless I were an unscrupulous dealer selling the customer a counterfeit coin! I would make sure they understood how to use the balance, and give them any other tips I could about telling real from f...

Re: Do you insure your Gold?

I finally looked into a rider on coins in a safe deposit box. I was quoted an annual premium of a little less than 2% of the value of the coins. That seems like an awfully high expense ratio to tack onto Gold each year. That's funny. It sounds like that insurer doesn't have much confidence in the s...

Re: Any downside to bars?

The main rationale for buying bars over coins is the lower markup. In my opinion, that's insufficient reason to buy bars. First of all, we're just talking a few percent. There is very little savings to be realized in buying bars over coins. And yes, I realize that we're talking real money here, whet...

Re: Left Fidelity

I have all of my investments at Fidelity, and have seen no reason to switch. I, too, would be very annoyed with the annuity-selling experience you had. I've avoided that because I've never wanted their advice, so I've never taken them up on their offer to meet with me. As a true believer in the perm...
