Re: Nobody believes in the Permanent Portfolio

i have seen the topic of myers brigs come up on other forums over the years and the results are similar to here, it may be that "forum posting" itself as a form of communication is the draw to intj as much or more than the forums topics are. INTx are about 10x as common in online fora than in real ...

Re: Volatlity Harvesting

I wanted to drag up this old topic in order to continue the discussion based on new information in the forums.  HB's original desire for high-volatility has always stuck around in the back of my mind whenever I'd read people recommending against Zero's.  I never thought that volatility, in the PP as...

Well, disappointing for me, but a great opportunity for you.  Hope it works out.  In the meantime, guess I'll just self educate.

In case it is a robust opportunity, here's hoping to a fund I can buy!

My personal feeling is to avoid any consumer product company that relies on brand names to generate product premiums.  I've had the feeling for awhile that the drive for consumers to purchase brand names is on the decline and will only accelerate, leaving those consumer product companies at the merc...

Re: SL7

Clive, I've read about your SL7 for a year or so now (both Bogleheads and here) - thanks for sharing.  I think it's a valid upgrade to the PP strategy in that it takes one of the asset classes I've been most nervous about holding due to performance reasons (cash), and effectively utilizes it, while ...

Re: Our forum and viewer traffic

I think part of the reasons the traffic isn't higher is because of the simplicity of the portfolio and the conversations around it.  Inevitably, once tweaks are brought up, it ends up coming back to - just stick to 4x25.  Not that it's bad, but it sort of makes lively discussion of the portfolio a b...

Re: best funds to start a 4 X 25 pp

Do you have to do it if you have GTU in a roth IRA? I don't think so. Just curious, but why did you choose GTU in a Roth IRA? I'm not sure I see the benefit. The Roth already protects you from taxes. GTU has higher expenses than IAU and GTU's premium is all over the place. Seems like a straightforw...

Re: Who Picked Up a New Mortgage While They Were On Sale?

It seems like we're all having the same issue - I felt I solved mine on the refinance and when comparing returns.  I save in Roth vehicles, so contributing to the PP in them (in this case, I ended up maxing my 457 and IRA) was something I considered a better investment in the end.

Re: Alternative to raising taxes - cut spending - what would you cut?

Yea, ultimately I think our country's problem comes down to the fact that we've taken liberty out of the equation and left life and the pursuit of (material) happiness.  Without venturing too far down a non-budgetary path, I'm pretty damn alarmed at the ever-faster plunge we've taken to surrendering...

Re: Who Picked Up a New Mortgage While They Were On Sale?

I unfortunately missed the great rates in Oct of last year.  I did leap on an almost-as-good 3.875% 15year fixed refinance in early Jan, and closed the last day of my lock for $1400 in closing costs.  I'm a pretty frugal person, so my condo isn't luxurious, but it's huge and nice by my standards.  T...

Re: Alternative to raising taxes - cut spending - what would you cut?

Attempting to discuss discretionary spending in regards to the federal budget is a lost cause without fixing the largest parts of the budget - Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, Defense, and Debt Servicing.  Everything else is rather minor in comparison. Easiest first - Social Security - Despite al...

Re: PP = inflation

I think Wonk did a great job of summarizing one of the better theories behind what's going on in our economy.  I do think one thing being missed is that there is downward pressure on the middle class' average wage.  The lower class already is around the floor, and those at the upper-middle and upper...

Storm, The fed doesn't really enact Keynesian policies.  They enact monetarist policies (Milton Friedman was a monetarist btw, not an Austrian).  The fiscal policy of congress is what bridges the gap from monetarism to Keynesianism.  It's fiscal policy that has been doling out cash through tax reba...

MT, So what kind of bankruptcy reforms would you consider helpful? The first step would be to un-do all of the 2005 "reforms."  That was a banking industry-led hold-up of the American people if ever there was one. The second would be to make student loan debt dischargeable like all other unsecured ...

I'd be interested in this, assuming the ER was low enough, although I may be willing to pay a tad more to start.  My Roth would definitely be transferred, and I may open a taxable.

Re: 5 x 5 PP to blend PP and the Ultimate Buy and Hold?

Exactly as craigr said - it depends on stocks going forward.  We've had a great bull market on stocks for 20 years of the PP returns, so when you back-fill with more stocks (including international) it improves historical returns.  However, the more "pop" you add, and returns, are entirely dependent...

If the cost of entry were super-high, I could sorta understand a certain point of view.  However, even looking at 1oz gold coins, or a vanguard fund with a $3k min, there are low-entry options available.  You can always do GLD/ALU, or some other no/low min funds/ETFs until you're able to invest in h...

Thanks for the response craigr! I just rechecked with my employer's two 457 administrators, their fund options make me want to scream, their cheapest option is a 0.30ER S&P500 fund, the other options are 0.8-1.4ER managed funds.  It's like they haven't changed anything since the 1990's (Hartford/Nat...

PP Questions on my plan options

Greetings, I slogged through all ~3300+ posts in the Boglehead forum over the last few weeks.  I'm a fan of the concept behind the PP, and am working to implement it in my retirement planning.  I would enjoy some advice on my retirement account options and the PP.  Retirement Account Options - PERF ...
