Re: Is Trump Restoring Separation of Powers?

Moda, what's gotten into you lately? You might want to check inside your bonnet. I think it's got a bee in it.

Can you name a politician or worldview that you do like? Or, let's say you were suddenly elected President. What would you like to see happen?

Re: Is Trump Restoring Separation of Powers?

Thank you for posting this technovelist! This is about the first positive development with the borders of the District of Columbia that I've been aware of for years...maybe decades. The article reads as though it's a continuation of an existing conversation, but I haven't seen any previous reporting...

Re: How to convince someone to use HB-PP

Very true that direct discussion won't accomplish nearly as much as a direct demo. Look what happened to me - I went through a pretty terrible loss after accepting the advice of a trusted broker, and even then it was a while before I finally forsook stock picking for good. My brother, for example, w...

Re: Teaching gender stereotypes

Sorry, but I have a hard time taking seriously an ideology that insists gender preference, i.e. sexual orientation is inherited but gender is something we can choose. Political correctness has reached the point where it's difficult to tell what is and is not satire. This is the best description of ...

Re: Teaching gender stereotypes

Ordaining women is something that the church does not have the authority to change. Could you explain that? Many Christian denominations have done exactly this. In the Catholic church it would require action from the Pope and possibly the Vatican council, but it is not by any means impossible. The ...

Re: Modified Golden Butterfly Portfolio

By noticing that the PP since 1987 showed up with a 5% CAGR, which didn't seem correct, so I looked at the components individually (yes I checked I had the right #s in the right places) and gold wasn't behaving like it should. It was a strange result - can't reproduce it now but there was no bump in...

Re: Modified Golden Butterfly Portfolio

BTW be careful about selecting "Gold" in portfoliovisualizer.com. I think it's actually gold mining stocks. I got horrid results for the PP when I played with its backtesting, which may explain some of the negative comments on the board lately about long term performance. When I looked at ...

Re: How to convince someone to use HB-PP

Frugal, sounds like your first battle is to enlighten your friends about passive vs. active investing. That's hard enough to do without adding the complication of the PP. There are lots of resources for this - check the Bogleheads wiki, which may include some in your language, as well as Harry Brown...

Re: Teaching gender stereotypes

I actually got into a couple discussions with feminists about these issues, and I was absolutely floored at how hateful they were! I've learned to be more careful about discussing these topics with women since then. Good for you for holding your ground, Michelle. However, do be careful about catego...

Re: PP and expected asset class returns

Both US stocks and US bonds are in negative territory. Of course no one can predict the future, etc. But we are currently at a high CAPE and very low bond yields, so that's why expected returns on those are so low. Has PP encountered similar situations before and if so, how does it perform? Yes it ...

Re: Soooooo mad at Vanguard!!

Your real estate broker and lawyer both should have warned you about that. It's not going to be that much of an extra hassle, but I know it's annoying to get surprises in an already complicated process. Good luck though!! An alternative might be to write a check to your lawyer, let it clear, then ha...

Re: EU-PP whilst buying a house.

Frugal, The decision to buy a house should not be based on your long-term investments. It's a consumer/quality of life decision first and foremost. Then figure out how much you need to save for a the standard 20% down payment, and what your anticipated fixed costs will be - counting everything inclu...
