Re: Federal debt ceiling

Yes, I'm in the same camp as Tenn. New government debt simply increases the supply of Treasury bonds, are bought, traded, etc. A household or individual can't issue bonds the same way, so debt has a completely different meaning to a household vs government. There must be a limit to this process, but...

Re: The GOLD scream room

It's kinda fun to guesstimate the gold price by the terminology used in this thread. "Depressing" for example means the price has dropped by around 30 points. And sure enough! I guess I'm not bothered by it because I'm not paying much attention. Not close to any rebalance bands so there's ...

Re: Equifax hack

Well, open source software is not intended to be super-secure. It's meant to give people a free, self-maintained option which is great for, say, a small business. Somehow that doesn't translate to a company that should have security standards far higher than your average Silicon Valley startup, or h...

Re: Permanent Portfolio Book Question

I will be taken to task for saying it, but stocks are up 71% in 5 years, long bonds (TLT) up 22%, and gold -26%. You might want to underweight stocks a bit, like 20% instead of 25%, and hold 30% cash instead of 25%. Just my personal opinion. I don't know about "taken to task" but I would ...

Re: Equifax hack

Speaking of two-factor authentication, it seems that they're now hijacking cell phones to get around those protections--and doing it with greater ease and success than through ordinary hacking. https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/08/21/business/dealbook/phone-hack-bitcoin-virtual-currency.html?emc=edit...

Re: Federal debt ceiling

This is Trump at his best. In the current climate, a President bypassing his party's Congressional leaders and going straight to the opposing party's leadership is unimaginable. Obama tried to do it once as I recall, but failed to get further than a weekend retreat with John Boehner. I hope he succ...

Re: New Here - I want to make sure I got the basics!

Yes, stocks are great...until they aren't. Which I think our new PP investor has already figured out. If your goal is aligned with that of the PP - that your wealth comes from your career and the role of investments is to protect and enhance it (see Harry Browne's rules in addition to Tyler's post a...

Re: New Here - I want to make sure I got the basics!

Welcome!! There's nothing wrong with your implementation, but I agree with Kriegspiel about diversifying your cash holding. Set up a treasury bill autoroll program with an online brokerage or Treasury Direct. Or, some forum members like the short term Treasury ETFs SHV (T bill equivalent) or SHY (3 ...

Re: Equifax hack

Is it common for institutions with reams of highly sensitive data to use open source software??? Given what they're holding, Equifax's security should be more like the NSA, the Pentagon, and major banks like Chase. It shouldn't be run like a video game company. I'm a little shocked that they were us...

Re: Equifax hack

I thought about this too so I checked it with my first wife's SSN and got a positive hit. She's been dead for 16 years. So I just started making up bogus names and SSN's. Sure enough every one of them came up positive. So one of my former employers is run by a bunch of crooks. Or.... This is making...

Re: Equifax hack

EF says they will waive credit freeze fees for 30 days How generous of them. Nice windfall for Experian and TransUnion who aren't waving fees. My sister just checked the Equifax site and had some excellent questions. Her entire family including her two kids, who have no credit history at all not to...
