Re: Fear is the mind-killer

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God doth so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much m...

Re: Fear is the mind-killer

Definitely true that not everyone can do this. That's why leaders and hierarchies exist: so (theoretically) the strongest and wisest among us can use their power to create a just and harmonious environment for those beneath them. Sadly today's elites feel more like robber-baron looters who are most ...

Re: Fear is the mind-killer

My college degree was pretty freakin' expensive too, so I paid off the debt and then moved on with life. No need to dwell on it! I find that if something is keeping me awake at night, I need to address it as a pants-on-fire priority #0 task. Paying off my 7% student loan debts after graduation was o...

Re: Fear is the mind-killer

it's a curious paradox that often the harder we try to force a situation into our mental model of how it should be, the less it works, or the worse the outcome turns out to be is even if it does work. My daughter is a perfect example. Did some online tutoring for the SAT, took it 3 times, did a lit...

Re: Fear is the mind-killer

Cortopassi, the way I would describe it is, "give it your all, but let go of your attachment to the outcome." Obviously we all have goals and preferred outcomes, but it's a curious paradox that often the harder we try to force a situation into our mental model of how it should be, the less it works,...

Re: Fear is the mind-killer

Another thing: from an emotional perspective, I've realized that I'm personally more comfortable with the risk of exposure to stock market under-performance than I am the risk of missing out on stock market gains because of the desire to preserve and defend my gains. I'm old enough that I can start ...

Re: Fear is the mind-killer

What I realized was that for myself, the desire to protect my financial gains arose from a worry that I would be unable to replace my income. For me , the PP was a fear-based portfolio. YMMV. :) I went through the process of losing that income just like I feared. But then with little effort, regaine...

Re: Fear is the mind-killer

You continue to intrigue me, PS. Finish the quote... I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain. Precisely. I no longer fight my fear to ...

Re: Fear is the mind-killer

PS - great to hear from you. I started to put this in the religion thread but was afraid it would lose the context. I'll keep it brief. Your post struck as quite harmonious with the LCMS confessional Christian view: God is in charge of everything and everything we have is a gift from Him. "It's all...

Re: Fear is the mind-killer

And then, shit happens. The economy goes in the tank around the same time you develop a chronic medical condition or suffer an injury, and then because of the economy you get laid off and can't afford insurance, or even if you can then you get addicted to opioids and end up dying of a fentanyl over...

Re: Fear is the mind-killer

When you get into your 50s+, and in some careers maybe earlier, the possibility of being let go from your job position and not being able to get re-hired into a similarly well-paying position becomes much more likely in many fields. I lost my job two years ago and found another one that pays me $30...

Re: Fear is the mind-killer

My one quibble is your comment that the PP is a fear-based portfolio. [...] However, Harry Browne was not a fearful person nor is every PP investor motivated by fear. The second rule is "Don't assume you can replace lost wealth." On one hand, that's good advice. But while it's factually true that y...
