Re: What's going on with silver?

Platinum is an industrial metal (catalytic converters and hydrogen fuel cells, for example), so it's driven by different factors than gold.

Re: IAU is now commission-free at Fidelity

Sounds like a great choice! Now you just have to be careful not to spend too much of your GB on all the good food and beverages available. The beauty of the GB (or PP) is the consistency of the income to fund the things you care about most. Fortunately beer & BBQ are relatively cheap vices in the g...

Re: IAU is now commission-free at Fidelity

Just curious, did you make this move because you think real estate is overvalued/peaked, and are planning to get back in after the next melt down? Or did you just no longer want to deal with the inevitable headaches of home ownership? None of the above. Although I admit that not having any yardwork...

Re: Trump as tragicomedy

Not completely on topic, but I stumbled upon this speech from Mueller back in 2011. It's pretty interesting, given the current investigation into Russian influences. But the playing field has changed. We have seen a shift from regional families with a clear structure, to flat, fluid networks with gl...

Top off you say?
If you don’t mind, exchanging from SCV to IAU or contributing from cash?
Just sold my home and had a nice new chunk of change to invest. O0
Did you move into a van, by any chance? ;)

Re: Trump as tragicomedy

I like the word "bloviate." It just sounds right. bloviate Bloviate is closely associated with U.S. President Warren G. Harding, who used it frequently and who was known for long, windy speeches. H.L. Mencken said of him, "He writes the worst English that I have ever encountered. It reminds me of a ...

Re: Trump as tragicomedy

I do a lot of reading as well, and have read Obama's first book, back in 2005, I believe. It was pretty dry, if I remember correctly. And I agree, I wouldn't be shocked if I found out that politicians get larger book advances than regular folks.

Well, the time has come for me to buy some additional gold. It appears that GLDM is the best option, due to the ER. Does anyone disagree?

Re: How to handle 529

Xan, I think this is a reasonable idea. We're now withdrawing from a 529 account for private school. Obviously we didn't plan for that previously, but with the new tax law, it's possible and makes sense in our situation. In our case, we made the 529 contributions originally to obtain a state tax ben...

Re: Trump as tragicomedy

I'm with you on ol Bill, but Obama appears to have a decent accounting for his wealth. Writing books can be lucrative, apparently. http://time.com/money/4439729/barack-obama-net-worth-55th-birthday/ Bill Clinton and Trump have some things in common: Grifters, serial adulterers, etc. But I still have...

Re: Trump as tragicomedy

The economic expansion has been underway since 2009. I don't give much credit to Obama for that, and I certainly don't give much credit to Trump for not managing to end it yet. Job growth and wage growth have slowed since Trump's election, relative to the last 18 months of the previous regime. Unfor...
