Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

That's a great chart, Sophie; allow me to reproduce it here so that folks can see more easily. nyc_hospitalizations.png That's very different from what we've seen around here: austin_hospitalizations.png The different way this has played out in different places is surely coloring how we all view thi...

Re: Reasons why I will not be getting injected for the Wuhan

Vinay Prasad MD MPH is a pretty reasonable dude. He’s pro-vax, but not at the complete expense of critical thinking. He seems to be more and more understanding of vaccine hesitancy given the attempted shutdown of scientific debate. Here’s a new video discussing the latest concerns about myocarditis...

In defense of tomfoolery he sent me a PM just before he got banned in which he dropped out of the tomfoolery character and shared some information about our mutual respect for Thomas Sowell. His posts were confusing and troll-like to be sure but I think he meant well. He and SomeDude haven't techni...

Re: Reasons why I will not be getting injected for the Wuhan

I think we (human race) tend to think we know and understand things more than we really do. This is a virus that is worldwide, mutating, spreading randomly, infecting millions/billions of people who either don't care, don't know, are hyper vigilant, or somewhere in between. This is a problem with a...

No, it does not. Getting the vax does NOT reduce the transmission.
This might be something we can do actual research on and find out an answer. My understanding is that it DOES reduce the transmission by a huge amount. What it does not do is 100% prevent transmission.

Re: Public School Issue

You might like the book, The Beautiful Tree , by James Tooley, about poor people in the third world who give up on the free government schools. It’s about alternative schools, not home schooling. I just heard a discussion about US schooling. Years ago there were 100,000 one room schools in the coun...

Re: Public School Issue

Private doesn't necessarily mean profit-making: I would think most schools would be non-profits. You're probably right about it being a pipe dream. But something like it happened in Louisiana (or at least in New Orleans?) right after Katrina: the public school system was demolished and replaced with...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

Xan I understand your reasoning here, however I'm not sure why it only applies to the conservative viewpoints on the forum. There are people on the liberal side who have not been banned, and yet have the same negative effect. Any thought of doing something about that? I can't think of anybody who h...

I was thinking about your troubles with the masking rules at your kid's school, jalanlong. I'm thinking that the answer to all of this is to end the monopoly of government-run schools. All schools should be private. The state government can set some dollar amount that is attached to the kid to be sp...

This from Dr Zelenko's website. He's an anti-vaxxer but still sees the great danger from Covid. According to him, anyone contracting Covid over the age of 45 has a 5-10% mortality rate! "High Risk Patients: Patients are considered high risk if they are over the age of 45, or if they are younger tha...

US death rates are plummeting. The pandemic is ending.
I have to think that this third surge that's ending is the last one: what with the vaccine and pretty much everybody doing pretty much normal things, seems like we must be onto the endemic background infection rate from here. Right?

Here’s the bottom line on charity deductions. I love my personal charity deduction. I despise having my tax funds defacto support many causes I’m adamantly against. Mortgage deductions…a sop to real estate. Why should those who can afford a house have it subsidized when the vast majority or renters...

Re: The end of the Roth conversions?

Myriad private charities also operate quite inefficiently. Are you saying that everything from the local, privately run Assistance League which hands out clothes for schoolchildren to the local symphony orchestra and opera company should be beholden to the federal government in the name of "efficie...
