I hadn't realized the person on the shirt in your avatar was meant to be you, Vinny. I thought it was a wizard or something.

Re: Mask wearing / Returning shopping carts

The problem here is that some people think being forced to wear a mask is good for society and some people think it is bad for society. I assume most people would agree that returning a shopping cart is good for society but if there were tyrannical shopping cart nazis forcing me to push it a certai...

Re: Question for Xan re Searching

This morning I was wondering whether anyone here has been hedging LT treasuries with TBT. When I searched for "TBT," I got the response that the search term was too short to be recognized. I've encountered this before when I've searched for a thread discussing a particular ETF. Is there a workaroun...

Re: Are most people here sticking with Treasuries?

Glad that I also hold a big batch of US dollars, which appears to be the only thing anyone actually wants anymore. I’ve never bought UUP - no fancy investments for me — but I admit I search once in a while to see if there’s talk of it. I think he's talking about the PP's cash allocation, or somethi...

Re: Vinny’s Mexican Adventure

It's pretty clear that slavery was the primary driver of the first batch of states to secede. But can you say that about the second batch? The ones that left AFTER Lincoln raised an army to go invade their neighbors? So you can say that slavery was the reason for the first secession (and we should ...

Re: Vinny’s Mexican Adventure

Completely inaccurate, horribly so for a very dedicated set of abolitionists who were in a minority but a politically powerful one. If you read the war was not primarily over slavery at its core, you are reading widely discredited historical theories generated by southern historians starting in the...

Perhaps another relevant question: let's say your portfolio lost 4% real every year forever. How long would it support your spending?

Re: Scarce and high priced energy in Europe

Scott Adams is generally wrong about most everything, as he was about Trump. He should have stuck with the cartoons. Can you elaborate? What I recall was that he was one of a small number of voices saying "this guy has a chance to win, and people don't see it because they're watching a different mo...

Re: Scarce and high priced energy in Europe

My understanding is it's a big issue in universities in particular, where promotions/grants/hiring/firing are based more on skill at demonstrating fealty to a DEI agenda than to actually doing what you're there to do.

Ways and Means: Lincoln and His Cabinet and the Financing of the Civil War

I've just finished "Ways and Means: Lincoln and His Cabinet and the Financing of the Civil War" and enjoyed it greatly. It would be of interest to a lot of folks here. It mostly focuses on US Treasury Secretary Salmon P Chase and the things that both sides were doing from a financial perspective. Bo...

Asians are the masters of themed restaurants that blatantly ignore copyrights. Years ago I taught English in an Asian country during a summer between college semesters. In the country's capital city where I worked there was this restaurant chain called Acme Burgers. It was a complete 100% McDonald'...

Re: Safe deposit boxes: Revisited

What is currently the best SDB Insurance? Diversity. Split it up between multiple boxes in different small town no name banks. That said, that was my strategy last year. This year, I started getting nervous about the trend for banks not really giving safe deposit boxes the respect that they used to...

Re: Any Mac Users here?

Like Joypog, I just plug a standard USB mouse into my Mac (mini). I’ve never owned a Mac mouse. However, I love Apple’s magic trackpad. This is a standalone bluetooth device that I keep to the right of the keyboard. My palms always graze the centered trackpad that are built into pretty much every b...

Re: Buy and Hold Stock Millionaires

A Total stock market index fund seems to me the definition of doing nothing. I have become more and more a fan of total instead of any slice and dice stock funds. I would disagree. Index funds are active funds as they add stocks when the corresponding index adds them and then they sell stocks with ...

Re: Anybody got Beef with the Dispatch, Jonah Goldberg, David French etc.

I thought Biden's speech and all the background optics were poorly done, but the main message was not completely off the mark. Under the heading of unification, I have wondered what effect, if any, it would have had if Biden had worked in a shot or two at the more extreme elements among Democrats. ...

But joypog, your continued use of the term "bootlicking Trumpists" doesn't inspire much confidence in the sincerity of your requests. I was borrowing the term from ishrugged who utilized the phrase it a couple responses up. I never used it previously. Apologies if it offended you. No, it appears yo...

joypog, could I reiterate a question that I Shrugged asked and that you misunderstood or avoided? Are you saying that ANYONE who supports Trump, prior to the "lesser of two evils" general election phase, is a bootlicker? Your response seemed to be that relatively few people here are in that camp. Agreed that Trump would have never won. He had his base. On the basis of how he'd performed during his four years ... he certainly did not convert any voters to voting for him. To the contrary he lost many of his voters who voted for him in 2016. "Poll shows how Trump surged with women and Hispanic...

Re: Trump reelection bid

Everything you say may be true, but this: I still I can't fathom how Hunter's laptop (even given what we know now) would have swung the election. doesn't really make sense. The election (similar to 2016's) was a knife's edge, swinging on tiny margins in a few key states. It wouldn't have taken much ...
