Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
The parable does well at teaching not to get too high after a win and too low after a loss. That's also the big lesson over a long baseball season by the way. It might go too far, though, into encouraging total passivity. Suppose the farmer had been in a position to help his son in order to not have...

I'm not deleting the account for now, but unless some convincing evidence appears, I think this is a bot.

Re: Grilling Fauci
I certainly DO hope they "go after" him. Don't even really care about a conviction (which is impossible now post-pardon anyway). But I think we do need a thorough investigation of who knew what when, to the extent possible what motivations people had. Just for learning so we can do better ...

Would an entity named "Robin Hood" ever be trustworthy to hold investment assets? Seems like a complete clanger of a name.

Option 2 may not align either: does it mean that it goes to charities the fund has already donated to, or is it functionality equivalent to Option 3?
Sure seems like the best plan is to pick a charity now and give it the money. Then there's no problem and no paperwork.

Waiting on not-hold
I contacted a company for an insurance quote by filling out a form online. Very quickly I got a phone call from them (fine). The lady was collecting just a bit more information before forwarding me along to somebody else. I answered her handful of questions and she said she'd wait with me while wait...

Is there a reason you're keeping a pile of money in the DAF rather than giving it to a charity?
What happens to that money when you die?

I've just received an email asking me to approve or disapprove of each of a long list of names. Does anybody have any idea how to find out why anybody would vote for or against these people?

Don't get your meat where you earn your bread. First time I am seeing this one. Original to you? No. I don’t remember where I first heard it. 😱 A Bing search reveals several references to it. Before reading one of them I could not fathom what it meant. https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/don%27t+g...

I'd be curious whether Smith has ever experienced a broken record that skips back to where it was before over and over. I'm guessing he hasn't. If he's able to know about and use the phrase despite that, seems like it'll survive a good long time.

Re: "U.S. Treasuries not the safe bet they once were"
Your house dropped 30% of its value between 2018 and 2022? I would think that's a very rare situation. My Zillow graph for the last 10 years. It was not precisely between 2018 and 2022. It was the two months I chose for each of those two years. Capture.JPG Mine has a similar overall trend to yours,...

For those who wonder, the vanguard index funds consist of multiple classes of the same fund. They are able to launder their gains through the institutional and ETF class. https://www.investopedia.com/how-vanguard-patented-a-system-to-avoid-taxes-in-mutual-funds-4686985 The process is completely leg...

Re: We should all write to our members of Congress and demand tax reforms
It's also important to note what counts as "taxes". When the phrase "federal income tax" is used, it typically means that Social Security and Medicare are NOT being counted as taxes. There's an argument for this, since paying into those systems in theory leads to later payouts, a...

Re: We should all write to our members of Congress and demand tax reforms
Well, as Vinny pointed out, the tax is not on revenue but on profit. A 2% tax on revenue in your example would be the entirety of the profit. A 2% tax on the profit would be far less.

Vinny, I certainly appreciate your insights, especially into the situation with S-corp vs C-corp tax preparation.
Let me ask you this: since there seems to be no downside to corporate income taxes, why not have the rate be 50%? 90%? 100%?

Re: We should all write to our members of Congress and demand tax reforms
I don't accept the hidden tax as I believe it's based upon a flawed premise. People believe that athletes making more money leads to higher ticket prices. It does not. We live in a competitive economy. You cannot just pass on your added expenses to the consumer. Each corporation is already charging...

Re: We should all write to our members of Congress and demand tax reforms
The question of corporate income tax is mostly orthogonal to your point, barrett. It could be revenue neutral, you'd just need to adjust the personal rates. It would be more honest. As far as the appetite for cutting, you're right, it's basically nonexistent. We'll see what inflation ends up looking...

Re: We should all write to our members of Congress and demand tax reforms
I disagree about the corporate tax rate: that should be 0%. Is your rationale for this the double taxation argument? If yes, it then conflicts with SCOTUS and Citizen's United where they deemed corporations to be "people" with all the rights thereto. FWIW, I disagree with SCOTUS and agree...
