Re: Ruth Bader Ginsburg

I am sure a lot of you know specific reasons why you'd like a liberal vs conservative court and vice versa. Seems reasonably immaterial to me. The one that is always brought up is Roe v Wade. I really don't know much about that. If I understand correctly that legalized abortion, would overturning t...

Re: Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Voting against a proposed appointee because of something specific to that candidate is one thing. Voting against the appointment purely because of party affiliation is not good. I would agree with this, but I would also note that party affiliation doesn't exist in a vacuum. It correlates with impor...

Re: Ruth Bader Ginsburg

I don't know that I have a better system, but I'd just like to point out that lifetime appointment for these judges makes for some horrible mixing of politics with humanity. Some huge portion of the country is effectively always hoping that the right person will die. We ghoulishly plot out how long ...

Re: Biden plan to limit 401K deductions

Just playing Biden's advocate here, in terms of the retirement crisis: If there's a fixed 20% refundable tax credit, then many people who have low incomes with virtually no incentive to save currently (because a current tax deduction doesn't do much for them) now suddenly are being paid to put money...

Re: Donating appreciated assets

Yup, I've done this too, via a donor-advised fund at Fidelity. If you itemize deductions this is pretty much a mandatory move, in place of writing a check or giving cash. Especially good as a tool to take your marginal tax bracket down a peg, if you're just over a limit. Another nice advantage is t...

Re: 60-40 Portfolio Won't Prepare Investors for Retirement

Yep! Love how Harry Browne picked up where this article left off. I am nervous about the 60/40 that I've got in my active retirement accounts. I would switch it to a PP in a heartbeat if my retirement plan permitted gold investment (i.e. a brokerage window). Once I retire and/or have access to that...

Re: When someone's opinion differs from yours...

If you had a serious medical issue that required surgery would you forego the definite most qualified surgeon because his / her medical views were 100% opposite to yours and move on to the next most qualified one whose views were not so opposite to yours? Vinny I'm not sure how that's analogous her...

Re: Rage by Bob Woodard

Actually I was suggesting that we might need to pare down what's already here, too... I don't think we can have this much of somebody's book posted on the forum. And, it's too much to have a useful discussion. Maybe a thread about each of 5 major highlights? Or a thread about own summary of some the...

Re: Is Trump doing a good job?

I'm not saying you're wrong. But, wow, what a big juicy target that Trump tax return is. Would the NYT pay a leaker for it? I don't actually know. I'm guessing it's a federal crime to leak it, so probably they wouldn't pay. Regardless, if that one hasn't leaked, it seems like the system is working ...

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us

I have plain vanilla Verizon FIOS, which is 50 Mbps for both up and downstreaming. I've never had any reason to need more, and I have no desire to pay extra for faster speeds. The interesting question is what's going to happen when true 5G phones are introduced. 5G will be even faster than this, so...
